Research Ethics Committees: Gaining Approval
This project has undergone the necessary review process through both the NHS Central Office for Research Ethics Committees and the University of Manchester Ethics Committee. We have been granted approval to conduct the research.
Informed Consent: What You Need To Know
Before you agree to participate in this research we want to make sure that you are informed as to the purposes of the research and what you would expect to undergo as a participant. There are five parts to this project and for each part we have produced an information sheet to let you know what is involved as a participant. If you are interested in participating in any part of the research please read the appropriate information sheet as indicated below.
Study 1: Evolving Patterns of Patient-Professional Interaction
We want to know what kinds of information you use to help you cope with your condition and how this fits in with your journey through the consultation process. This 12-18 month longitudinal study will follow individuals through the medical consultation process from initial diagnosis of one of the following conditions: prostate cancer, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, depression.

Study 2: Be Web Healthy Survey
We want to find out how the Internet can help you manage your health. We want to hear from users of the Internet who do use the Internet for health information as well as those who don’t.

Study 3: Information Searching and Evaluation on the Internet
We want you to show us how you search for health information on the Internet and how you evaluate its usefulness to you. You need to be an Internet user and have one of the following conditions: prostate cancer; breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, depression). We invite you to come into the University of Manchester for this part of the project.

Study 4: Virtual Health Communities
Virtual health communities may help you to manage your health. We want to hear from members of identified communities about what their experiences of health communities are and whether this has helped them or not.

Study 5: Health Information Preferences
This survey brings together everything we’ve learnt about health information, the Internet and health from the previous studies. You will be able to tell us about your preferences for health information from the Internet or otherwise.
